Long wave modelling of films of simple and complex fluids and biofilms
Biofilms are structured communities of bacterial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix that adhere to both inert and living substrates. From the viewpoint of soft condensed matter physics, they can be considered as layers consisting of bioactive colloids suspended in a visco-elastic fluid. Within this project, biofilms will be described within a coarse-grained long-wave approach, focusing on the osmotic spreading of biofilms at solid-air interfaces and the role of surfactants for biofilm growth.
